British music heavyweights Burial, Four Tet, and Thom Yorke shocked the internet last week with the sudden release of a 12” collaboration on Four Tet’s record label TEXT. The two tracks “Ego” and “Mirror” come on a super exclusive unmarked black label vinyl-only release limited to 300 copies. As you could probably guess the record sold out in minutes, which is a shame because the music is so good and really deserves wider distribution. There have been some crappy radio rips floating around on the internet for the last few days but I finally found a high quality vinyl to digital transfer of the release. Both tracks perfectly and amazingly blend all three artist’s styles. With this high of a caliber music resulting from the collaboration I really hope there is a lot more to come from the trio.

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’ The Social Network is a great album let alone soundtrack. The music is, at times, so subtle in the movie that you can’t really appreciate it till you put on a pair of headphones and turn up the volume. It is no surprise Reznor and Ross won the Oscar.

OFWGKTA or Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All is a fast rising young hip-hop collective from LA. Odd Future has self produced and self released 4 mixtapes and 8 solo albums in less than two years, all of which are free to download from their website. What makes Odd Future so fascinating is that they are typical teenagers making amazing music; and by typical I mean sick minded, obscene, hormonal, immature, violent, and hilarious. I haven’t heard hip-hop like this since jr high when my friend let me listen to the Slim Shady LP on his discman after school. But even that comparison doesn’t really fit. The group’s leader and director is Tyler The Creator who also goes by Wolf Haley and Ace Creator. Tyler handles most of the production, beat making, and video direction for the group. Tyler’s grimy, dank, lo-fi, and at times synth heavy beats are the perfect background for the groups sick and twisted lyrics. I have to warn you that this stuff is not for the faint of heart or weak stomachs. Tyler The Creator signed a one record deal with XL Records to release his second album Goblin set to drop in April. Mellowhype, made up of Left Brain and Hodgey Beats, have also recently signed to Fat Possum Records. Other members of Odd Future with self-released albums are Earl Sweatshirt, Domo Genisis, Mike G, and Frank Ocean. Odd Future’s success in the last few months alone has skyrocketed and the group’s wild teenage skate rats have quickly become the vanguard of modern hip-hop.

Jamie XX remixed Gil Scott-Heron’s critically acclaimed come back album from last year, I’m New Here. The remixed album is called We’re New Here. As odd as the pairing may seem there is a logical connection. Richard Russel produced Gil Scott-Heron’s I’m New Here, which was released on XL records the same record label that released The XX’s debut. Russel was the one who planted the remix album idea to Jamie pointing out that the production on I’m New Here was heavily influenced by the XX album. Its kind of cool to hear two musicians separated by a couple generations play off one another, albeit indirectly. I am still partial to the original album because it is so perfect but the Jamie XX reinterpretation is pretty good. Grab both albums bellow.

My brother (DJ AkbAr) turned me on to these guys from our mother’s homeland of Chile. The group is called Matanza (Spanish for masacre, which is exactly what their music does). I am pretty sure they have created a new sub-genre with their unique style that I can only describe as Andean Tribal House…and I fucking love it! Make sure you listen to these tracks with headphones. Their first EP, Amerindio is available now over at Beatport.

I love TV on the Radio. The band has returned from a hiatus and has announced the forthcoming release of their third album. The first single from the new album is called Will Do. The album is called Nine Types of Light and will be out in April. Can’t wait for this one either.
